Frequently asked questions about tooth whitening:

What causes tooth discoloration?

  • Did you know beverages such as coffee, wine, and tea can cause discoloration. There are also foods like cherries, blueberries and tomatoes. Other factors such as aging, tobacco use, and trauma.

What is whitening?

  • It is a procedure that reduces the appearance of stain and discoloration on the enamel of your teeth.

Is whitening for everyone?

  • Most people are candidates for whitening, but in some cases, heavily restored teeth may render the whitening gel ineffective. Dr. Gress can determine who is an ideal candidate with an oral examination.

Is tooth whitening safe?

  • Yes. The ingredient, hydrogen peroxide that is used in the whitening process has been researched in clinical settings has shown it is safe to use.  But it is important to maintain dental checks during this process.

What is the process?

  • During your first visit, we will take an impression of your teeth so we can make a custom tray to fit your mouth.
  • The second visit we will try-in the custom tray. You will be given the Zoom! Whitening kit™ with a demonstration on how to use the product.
  • Over the next 10-12 days, you will wear the trays for 4-6 hours a day, preferably at night, for optimal results. After the first week, Dr. Gress will need to check how well your teeth have whitened. If Dr. Gress feels more time is needed, she will inform you. At that time, more instructions may be given and she will have you return after all whitening has been used for a final check.

Any side effects?

  • It is common to experience some tooth sensitivity during treatment. However, this is only temporary and symptoms usually disappear within 2-3 days.

How long does whitening last?

  • Your teeth will always be lighter than they were. However, some patients may need to touch-up once a year if you consume staining substances like caffeine, wine and tobacco.
